The Big Island has big eats for hungry vegans and vegetarians! I just traveled to Kona side a few months ago and was so stoked with all the options. Hilo-side has it’s own goodies, and Pahoa is another awesome spot.

A note about the choices here: I struggle about whether or not to include omnivore restaurants here. On the one hand, I want to fully support all vegetarian/vegan restaurants, yet I also want to let people know ALL the places that serve good vegan options. What do you think?
Healthy, vegan fast food. This tiny spot is in a parking lot, but don’t let that stop you from dropping by to get great fully vegan breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sandwiches, vegan dogs, bowls, pizza, and tons of awesome donuts! Find them on Instagram; fully vegan!
Under the Bodhi Tree
This restaurant is veggie heaven, for real. An incredible and diverse menu that showcases both raw and cooked meals, we loved everything we ate here on our last trip over. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, delicious baked goods along with yummy teas and coffees, this is the spot to check out when you’re on Kona-side (their location is in Waikoloa, about 10-15 minutes north of Kona; opening in Pahoa spring 2019!). Find them on Instagram and Facebook; fully vegetarian.
Island Naturals Grocery Store
A great food store that I love to visit when I go to Big Island – they have three locations (Kona, Pahoa, and Hilo). Downtown Hilo is the cutest, it just fits into the downtown vibe so nicely. Get all your groceries, bulk items, fresh veggies and tons of grab & go options. The Kona location has a good deli with veggie options, not sure about the other locations. Find them on Instagram and Facebook; omnivore but very veg-friendly.
Barefoot Zone Cafe
A sweet little cafe with a cool menu of crepes, smoothies, acai bowls, sandwiches, wraps. Find them on Instagram; omnivore, but very vegan friendly.
Laulima Food Patch
Fresh ingredients and local style eats make this omni restaurant too good to leave off the list. They have tea, booch, and nitro to pair with warm bowls, cold bowls, and build-your-own bowls with either rice, greens, or rice noodles. Super veg-friendly (and advertises on IG as vegan-friendly), so you’re definitely going to find something yummy here. Find them on Instagram and Facebook; omnivore but veg-friendly
Conscious Culture Cafe
Dozens of flavors of interestingly flavored homemade kombucha and jun (made with honey) pair perfectly with a huge menu of great options of very vegan friendly finds, like vegan ice cream, cashew cheeze, cheezecake, salads, sammies, tacos, burgers, bowls and MORE. The menu is huge and everything is clearly marked as vegan and gluten-free (and you can get housemade sauerkraut as a side, which makes me very happy!) Find them on Instagram and Facebook; omnivore but very vegan-friendly.
Sweet Cane Cafe
A sweet little cafe serving fresh pressed cane juice and a lot of awesome foods on the menu, including jackfruit, durian, kale (taro), and ‘ulu (breadfruit) in their handmade burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Find them on Instagram and Facebook; fully vegetarian.
Abundant Life Natural Foods
I’m a sucker for old-school hippie health food stores, and this is how I would classify Abundant Life. Tucked into vintage downtown Hilo, Abundant Life has all the goodies you need for a short visit or everyday grocery shopping, along with a selection of local and homemade items. Find them on Instagram; omnivore but veg-friendly
